I discovered my secret super power on this trip (- which is that I can make places teaming with busloads full of tourists look totally empty in photos I take). I discovered Mikey’s secret super power on this trip too, and it’s a hell of a lot more useful than mine is: he’s a BRILLIANT negotiator. I mean, SO GOOD. (How did I not know this??? How did this escape me for this many years? Or maybe that’s just the kick-ass thing about traveling; it reveals so much about people, one way or the other..?)
This is what happened: we arrived on Koh Chang island directly from Siem Reap, Cambodia. We paid a taxi to drive us directly from our hotel in Siem Reap Cambodia to our hotel in Thailand (and paid almost the same as if we took the bus). We had reservations at a pretty fancy place in Koh Chang – and the air conditioner in the fancy place wasn’t working for two nights. Mikey went to negotiate with the hotel and managed to get us a $300/night room as a complimentary apologetic upgrade for the rest of our stay.
The room was UNREAL – jacuzzi in the room – and if you opened the door to the back balcony, it led directly to a pool – with more pools below, slides for the kids. Infinity pools in the other area and oh! A huge white sand beach with warm sea water too!
The whole place was a water lover’s dream.
I didn’t take a ton of photos here because we were pretty busy loving all that water. Raisin fingers the whole way, baby.
That was the fanciest place I’ve ever stayed in – such a far cry from camping at Los Frailes – WOW, remember that?! Not like this swank was better than the simplicity of Los Frailes, but it is pretty nice to be able to shower after swimming. And that breakfast buffet thing was outta sight.
So, here’s to broken air conditioners and amazing men like Mikey who can get astonishing upgrades from them!
