You didn’t ask me to take on a cause. You didn’t ask me to decide to learn to run in my first trimester of pregnancy and raise $2,400 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Those of you within the Down syndrome community think that since it’s not about orphans and it doesn’t have “Down syndrome” in the title, it’s not related to our kids with Down syndrome. Oh, but it does. Our kids with Down syndrome are 15-20% more likely than kids without Down syndrome to contract a blood cancer. The child you are hoping and wanting to adopt and save from an institution? This child too, has a 15-20% higher risk of leukemia. Your child that you love with a fierceness that keeps you advocating even when it hurts? Yes, that child of beauty is included in that percentage.

Those of you within the “non-disabled” community, you say, great, great! This does a lot of good! But you also think it’s not going to touch you in some way. Oh, but it will. If not you directly, I can money-back guarantee you that unless and until we find a cure for cancer, there will be someone in your life that you love that will battle this.

Those of you within the disabled community, you say, wonderful, we care – but it’s not disability-specific. You are not talking about hearing research, stem cell research, something that is directly related to us. Oh… but my friends. It is. That’s the point. It’s directly to related to ALL OF US. Everyone. With and without disability. Man, woman and child. Every human being stands at risk while we have yet to find a cure.

It’s not going away until we do something about it.

“Doing something” involves research.

My cause is your cause. It’s for all of us. It’s for your future, your children’s future. It’s for your loved ones, my loved ones. It’s in honor of and in memory of those that are fighting for their lives right now – this very moment – as well as those that have died of this.

Give. Give today, give even if it seems too small – every dollar counts. Even if it’s one. Even if it’s 5, 10, 20 – 200 – 500. Whatever you can afford. And even if you think you can’t, give.
