We went to the Humboldt County Fair last week, just me and the kids. It was our first time and I was utterly floored with delight. It was simply wonderful, peaches and cream, awesome. Really nice people, interesting exhibits (cows!! rabbits! potato art! a flower show with local honey tasting!), nice stuff for sale (essential oils! hot tubs!), fun rides with – dig this – no lines! Clean! Ample nearby parking! (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Moxie had her first roller coaster ride (- she LOVED it!) (- she loved ALL the rides!), Micah had his first big-kid rides and I got to feel my heart clench up as I watched my firstborn baby walk into the bowels of Gravitron. MacQuinn slept a lot, poor tyke missed out.
I took waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many pictures!
Here’s the proof:
– are you still with me?!
Yay! – some of those photos were pretty overexposed, huh? I have my camera on manual these days and I forgot to check the light meter after we were in the barn. Booooo
So anyway, after the rides, we went wandering around and found this room with a permanent train collection in it. There were a few older guys there with the models, driving them via remote control. It was really similar to the one in Richmond, but smaller and with friendlier folk. I knew this because when Moxie ran under their train tables and was playing with the wires, they just laughed and shrugged.
Amazing models – so detailed, tiny, perfect. If you are ever in Ferndale, stop by the fairgrounds and check it out.
Humboldt County Fair:
Happens once a year in the cute little Victorian town of Ferndale. Definitely worth a trip up. Or in our case, up and over!
