Some Kind of Beautiful: A Photo Essay

I have a theory, it’s this:

I think outhouses help with depression.

I mean, one of the things about depression is that the biggest struggle is often in just GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE.

Yes, I had to put that in caps, because it’s *that* big of a struggle and it’s *that*big a deal. Getting up and out is half the battle for me – in the Bay Area, I could easily stay indoors for DAYS at a time, bordering on WEEKS.

Now, with an outhouse, I have to actually physically open the door, step OUTSIDE and take 20 or so steps just to pee first thing in the morning.

Depression can get lost in that configuration.

Which isn’t to say that I don’t struggle with depression anymore or that all in life is peachy-keen-hunky-door-bright-smiles-and-roses, but it is to say that it’s one hell of a lot better! [and if my theory is right, I wonder how on earth I can package and sell it outside of rural farms?]

****

This past week was crazy and wonderful and jam packed – the Best School Ever kept us busy, as did the business of the farm – something is always happening around here. Recently it’s been a lot of power outages, oh the joy of living off the grid comes around and bites then!

And there were two birthdays, one mother’s day, one amazing community celebration of May held by way of a May Pole Dance (- Micah thought it was “Maple” and wondered if we’d eat it?). We saw a whale off the beach and that cinched it for us: this place is total magic.

  • Wonderful pictures, Meriah, and I think you’ve got a good theory there about OUThouses. I could stay inside for weeks here in BC where the sky is nearly always my least favourite colour of all….grey. But a kick in the ass out the door usually results in a happier woman and mama. I found when we were tenting in MX I was so much more aware of the environment/weather and I enjoyed that connection to nature, made me healthier & happier.

I'm opinionated, friendly & chatty... I hope you are, too
