When you have a long-term illness, self-care is more important than anything else. Not only could not looking after yourself make your health worse, but it could also mean that you compromise your mental health, too, which (for obvious reasons) isn’t great. However, there are some specific ways to look after yourself if you find yourself in this situation, that you should try and remember if you want to stay as healthy – mentally and physically – as you can. We’ve noted them down here for those who want to do little things to take care of themselves!
Take time out
The truth is that you usually need to take some time out when you’ve got an illness, just to recover a little from any bad spells that you have. Sometimes, you can’t even get out of bed, but the important thing to remember is that these things are out of your control, and you need to put your health first. Maybe you just need to take a day off from work, or you need to cancel some plans that you originally had. You shouldn’t feel guilty about this, and you should always do all that you can to make sure that you feel that little bit better again. Self-care isn’t only about things like meditation, you know?
Tell people about it
Whilst you don’t always want everybody to know the ins and outs of your condition, your life will be a lot easier if you let some select people know about what you’re going through. Your boss is a good example here, and you should speak to them about the issues that you face. This way, when you call up and say that you can’t make it into work, they will be more understanding about the reasons why. Getting in touch with other people, like brain injury lawyers, is also key if you want to get some help and support in specific situations. Ultimately, telling people about your illness is key to your self-care.
Tailor your self-care to your illness
Depending on what your illness or disability is, your self-care will look a lot different to the self-care of others. Whilst it’s great to make sure that you take time out and tell people about it, only you know what works for you, and therefore you’re the only person who can decide what the best way to look after yourself actually is. If you think that meditation would help you, then great! If you think that staying in bed for a few hours would, then do that! Don’t let perceptions of self-care cloud how you look after your own body or mind, as you’re the one who understands them in the most depth and detail.
So, if you’ve got a long-term illness, then try your best to incorporate self-care into your life. Whilst it looks different for everybody, it may be easier to let people know about what you’ll need, and to take time out when you need to. Ultimately, your health should always come first!
