So the three kids were sick, and so was My Man (and I want to make a joke about what he’s like when he’s sick, but I don’t want to get in trouble – so just take an imaginative leap there).

I was completely burned out, exhausted. I hadn’t had a decent night of sleep in about a week.

  • Dishes, not done.
  • Groceries, unpurchased.
  • Laundry, piled high!

Everyone was hungry too. And you know what I did? I pulled out the Healthy Choice meals.

While they aren’t the (overpriced) fodder from organic, hand-ground-what-have-you cafes in the San Francisco Bay Area, they are:

  • Food that whiny, sick kids will eat.
  • Food that I can be relieved knowing is actually healthy – the vegetables in the frozen meals go from farm to freezer within 24 hours and ingredients are simple and fresh
  • Are not heavily processed
  • Reasonably priced

If you have a freezer, you’ll be glad you have some of this on hand for moments like the one I had last week.

ConAgra Foods frozen meals give families access to real ingredients like crunchy, freshly cut vegetables, homemade pasta and ripe fruit year-round. Just like most people blanch veggies before freezing them – ConAgra Foods does too – to help preserve color, texture and keep them fresh!

Give it a try sometime! Marie Callender’s hearty pot pies are filled with tender meat, freshly cut vegetables and Marie’s authentic golden, flaky crust. And Healthy Choice recipes use chef-inspired ingredients like, apples instead of sugar for tart sweetness and a splash of red wine for a punch of flavor instead of added salt.

Rice, rice

Moxie loves you so

Your bright flavour just makes her glow

Rice, rice

I wish I knew how to cook you.

It’s an unfortunate fact that I lived in Asia for 10 years, my daughter is one quarter Vietnamese and I can’t make rice well. It’s also an unfortunate fact that (however badly I do it) rice takes a long while to cook. So I was pretty psyched about Minute Rice’s Ready to Serve! little instant rice cups.

Things I liked:

  • it’s totally portable
  • it comes in many varieties including brown rice, brown and wild rice, multi grain, new Jasmine rice, and lots of different rice mixes
  • it’s ready in a minute (if you have a microwave)
  • it tastes good
  • it’s not expensive
  • it’s not full of fake ingredients (for the brown & wild rice that we tried, it was just water, whole grain brown rice, wild rice, soybean oil, salt, soy lecithin)
  • it’s super easy to stock up on (how come I never saw this before?)
